Three grades, one job

All three grades are stainless and all three will hold a child back. The difference is what they are alloyed with, and therefore how long they resist rust in the air you actually live in. Choose by location, not by price.

Grade 304

The workhorse. Eighteen per cent chromium and eight per cent nickel give a passive layer that resists ordinary rust, which is enough for a window in a city flat or a balcony that is not near the water. It is the grade we quote most often, and the right answer for most Chennai apartments inland.

Grade 314

More nickel than 304, which buys you headroom in places where corrosion is above average — heavy dust, industrial air, or a kitchen balcony where oil and moisture settle on the cable daily. It is a sensible middle step when 304 feels marginal but 316 is more than the job needs.

Grade 316

The strongest of the three, and the only one we recommend within sight of the sea. The molybdenum addition is what stops chloride from the salt air eating into the passive layer, which is exactly what happens to 304 on a sea-facing balcony in three monsoons.

How long each grade lasts

A properly installed, coated stainless grill should give fifteen to twenty years, and longer with a wipe down now and then. Inland on 304 that figure is conservative. On the coast with 316 it is realistic. On the coast with 304 you will see streaks within a few years, and no warranty will get the colour back.

Which one should you take?

Flat more than a couple of kilometres from the sea, windows and sheltered balcony: 304
Kitchen balcony, dusty road frontage, or heavy use: 314
Sea-facing, ground-floor damp, hospital or school: 316

Clean periodically and inspect cables, fixing points and frames. Arrange a professional inspection if you notice loose cables, damaged coating or corrosion; do not adjust cable tension yourself.
